About Me
My name is Sam Chase, photographer at Longwood university and freelancer in my spare time. I’ve been learning and practicing photography for over 5 years and began working for Longwood as of May 2019. In January 2020 I accepted an internship with them, which just entailed doing my normal week to week job. To describe my time as a photographer under the marketing department, I would sum it up as forever changing. Most events I have seen are rarely held twice in a year, and most of my time is spent interacting with students, staff, and visitors of the campus who partake in our campus’s events. The bulk of my work would be described as event photography, but I have photographed high rope courses, camps, and even individuals. Before I began working, I had a fear of failure and that my skills would be overshadowed by inexperience, however I have come to gain confidence because of my earlier failures in the year. I was allowed to mess up without repercussion and because of that I had the time to grow and make strides I’ve never thought possible, which even inspired me to finally start a business with clients like Long & Foster, Hampden Sydney College, Moton Museum, Sororities, and of course graduates. The experience of seeing your work published in alumni magazines and seeing your work posted on Facebook and Instagram, not just by the university but your peers as well, is an outstanding feeling. My experience in the field has translated to many business opportunities and recommendations from students, and because of this internship I feel accomplished in achieving a sense of dignity and self-respect for my work that will only feed into what I hope to do which is to work on creative photography and make a living off my talents.
